The Breakup… Cont’d
“@Boss???” I couldn’t believe my eyes. My boss and my girlfriend? What in the world?
“Mark, it’s good to see you. How’re you?”
I blinked! This guy, even after being caught, sounded as cool as a cucumber.
“I’m fine. Errrm, what are you doing here…….sir?” I bravely asked.
His eyes narrowed at the directness of my question. “What do you mean what am I doing here?”
I held up @Missy’s phone with the open chat.
“You are here to take my GIRLFRIEND out aren’t you?”… Again I added for effects “Sir”
At this point he got out of the car and being a few pounds heavier than me, I reflectively took a step back and looked around for the nearest escape route in case things got bloody (thank you Man O’ War training)
“So what if I’m here to take @Missy out?” he asked with a mocking smile.
At this point I had two options.
Laugh about the whole thing, crack a joke or two return @Missy’s phone, tell her it’s over, walk over to my car and drive my merry way home. Job…check, original intentions…check, complete teeth…check
Don’t go down without a fight. Freak out, give him a piece (or two) of my mind, take the matter up with my other bosses, bust his tire, bite his ear off…look for another job…
The white flag refused to be raised in my head. I was NOT going down without a fight.
“And you call…” I started when I heard a voice from the direction of the gate.
My head snapped to that direction.
@Missy’s mum was walking towards us, arms wide stretched, smiling with genuine happiness.
I kept my gaze on her and each step she took synchronized with the heavy beats of my heart.
I had to step back as @Boss swept her off her feet in a brotherly embrace. I took a step back and almost lost my footing as I narrowly missed stepping into a nearby gutter.
“Mark, it’s good to see you. How’re you doing?” @Mum asked, breaking the embrace
“I am doing very well…” I sounded like I had yam stuck in my throat.
“So Mark…” @Boss turned to face me, “You were saying that I what?”
I finally lifted up my eyes from the ground, where it had lingered in the past few awkward seconds. I looked at him boldly and said…
“And you call-ed @Missy alone? What about me naoow?”
He had an amusingly confused grin on his face. He was amazed at my quick AND smart comeback and was buying it. After all, I wouldn’t be in my right senses to pick as fight with my boss.
As for me, the slick grin never left my face…all through the evening when he took us (I, @Missy, @Pat and @Mum) out for dinner. Why should it leave? I just saved my job and got myself a free Chinese dinner.
To be continued??
