Ermm, so I’m back… Apologies for the errr, somewhat long and unusual lapse.

Thanks…and happy reading!
They settled down to sign the papers.
Joe was fuming silently, his dad was oblivious and Gladys stood behind him smirking. He wished he could stuff the sheets down her throat. Silly girl!
Now come on Joe, when did you get so violent minded?
…when she left me for my dad perhaps!
He managed to get her out of his thoughts and signed all the documents. As he got up to leave…
“Why don’t you join us for breakfast Jonathan.”
Joe showed no sign that he had heard Gladys’ stupid invitation, not to talk of getting irked by it.
He told his father goodbye and headed for the door.
“Joe really, are you just going to ignore my wife like that?”
Joe froze, his hands fixed on the doorknob.
What was this, a lungu? (corner…setup) A trick question? Was dad ill?
Seven slow seconds passed and he realized that he hadn’t moved… they hadn’t said anything either.
He slowly turned to face them, making a very conscious effort to keep a straight face.
“Dad. I did mention that I was rushing off right? So why are you subjecting me to the emotional and mental trauma of talking to this woman?”
His father stood, speechless. Not that he meant to offend the old man (well, maybe he did), but this was just pushing it. What was he thinking of?
Gladys was the first to find her tongue. But she spoke to her husband.
“Daaaaarling (with great emphasis), I’ll be upstairs; we’ll eat after your son leaves.”
And with that she turned and left without saying a word to Joe. Not like he was expecting any or needed any.
Joe turned back to head out the door when his father finally spoke.
“Jonathan! I see that you can’t bring yourself to be civil to my wife, I can understand that. But don’t you dare disrespect me young man! You know I’ll never tolerate that!”
The way he kept on saying “my wife” made Joe want to throw up. As much as he felt like letting loose on the old man, he knew when he had to back out.
“I’m sorry dad, you should understand that it’s hard to see… I’m trying but… I’m sorry.”
His father wasn’t an emotional man, so when his father reached out and gave him a manly hug… he knew something was up.
He pulled out of the hug anad just stood there, watching his father.
“So, see you later son.”
“No way dad, see me now. What is it?”
“What is what? I thought you were in a hurry to leave”
Something was definitely up. His dad (on a normal day) would have just looked at him with his trademark blank expression and that would be the end of the matter.
Today, dad looked uncomfortable.
“Daddy, what is it?”
Now the infamous blank look came out. There was no way it was going to work today.
So instead of backing down, he crossed his arms and raised his eyebrow… not only dad had a trademark look.
“Gladys is expecting our child.”
Joe didn’t know what to feel. It was bad enough that his ex girlfriend was now his mother-in-law.
With his father waiting for some sort of response…
Joe just stared at his feet.
