As she watched the traffic from the window of her 10th floor apartment, Linda instinctively rubbed her belly. It was a week to February 14, Valentine ’s Day, and all she could feel was the anxiety eating her up from the inside… and the baby, kicking with reckless abandon.
Last year had all the flowers, chocolates, gifts and passion. This year however…
She cleaned the tears that had begun to flow from her eyes.
She sighed and walked back to the living room, where she sat and continued reading her book. Her mind, everywhere else but on the book. Patiently waiting… for the husband she wished she never had.
It was 10:42pm when Leye pulled out of the car park in his black BMW. As he joined the main road his mind momentarily travelled home, to where his wife waited for him. He hadn’t planned to stay out this late, but his ‘appointment’ had lasted longer than he expected.
He turned to his right and caught the gaze of Tina, fixated on him.
Tina his employee… his mistress… his escape… his lover.
He turned back to face the road, but could still feel her gaze on him.
“What is it Tina?”
“Hmmm. It’s valz day next week.”
Here we go. What does she want this time?
“Uh huh. What about it?”
“Well, I was thinking…”
He stole another glance at her. This chic was just insatiable. He did have the money to take care of things but…
“I was thinking you should spend some time with your wife.”
He pressed his brakes and swerved the wheel to avoid a collision with the car behind him.
“You heard me, I can’t do this anymore. It’s been great yeah, and you’ve been good to me. But Leye we both know this is wrong; so very wrong. And I can’t pretend like everything’s normal anymore, cos it’s not. I’ve decided to move on from here, and from all of this.”
Leye couldn’t believe his ears.
“Are you for real?”
“No really, you are actually not kidding about this?”
“Tina you can’t be for real.”
“I’m not coming in tomorrow, or the day after, or the days and weeks that follow those either. That’s how ‘for-real’ I am!”
“Did I do something wrong? You can’t just leave like this.”
He couldn’t believe what she was saying.
“No you didn’t! You’re a great guy and very generous too. I just…, I just have to…”
She placed a hand over where his was placed on the gear stick.
“I don’t know if you ever feel guilty. But I do, most of the time. And I can’t continue with this hanging over me anymore. I really can’t.”
A teardrop or two came down her eyes.
She was for real!
Leye was irritated. He shook her hand off his and parked the car off the road.
“I know you want to talk; to make me reconsider, but my mind is made up. It’s been a while since…
Leye zoned out and eyed her wryly. She went on and on, and he actually waited for her to finish all the poppycock she had to say.
“I didn’t park so we could talk. I parked so you could get out of my car.” Cool as ice.
Tina’s mouth hung open in shock. She quickly recovered and opened the door, stepped out with as much dignity as she could muster and shut the door behind her.
They stared at each other for a full second, maybe two.
Then Leye drove off, leaving her standing on her own.
Leye sped for the house. He had to admit, that was a shocker, even for him.
Tina had always been so willing, so ready to do whatever he wanted. And as strange as it seemed, she was the only ‘other’ woman.
And now she just…
Now he was speeding home… to the wife he wished he never had.
He wound down and spat outside.
He was really irritated.
Tina got a cab and was headed home.
With shaky hands, she brought out her phone from her bag, pressed some buttons and…
“Hello, y-yes. Yes sir I did it. Please don’t… th..th…thank you. Hello?”
She dropped the phone in the bag and laid down on the backseat of the cab.
…shaking like a leaf.
