Happy reading. 🙂
In the next six days that followed, he drifted in and out of consciousness and each time he was conscious, he became more inclined to believe them. He had really lost his memory.
They called him Peter.
But it didn’t ring half a bell!
When he was awake, he was groggy.
He was getting better, they said.
He would be out sooner than expected, they said.
How soon? They never said.
The woman they called his wife, Sophia, came in everyday, and watched him with that blank expression of hers. Her eyes seemed to speak volumes but he couldn’t quite place what exactly he was missing. He couldn’t wait to get out and piece his life together, somehow!
When he felt strong enough, he walked to the bathroom and looked at himself in front of the mirror.
He was well built with strong tanned arms, pointed nose and random scars here and there (from the accident he was told). Quite good looking he had to admit… white teeth, nice smile, black hair blah blah blah.
He had no idea who this person was!
When he got back to the room, he stopped and stared at Sophia. She stared back.
“I married you?” He just had to ask.
“I married you?”
“I heard you the first time.”
“So why ask again?”
“It was a rhetorical question”
“Ok so, I married you right?”
“You’re asking for the third time?”
“Apparently I am”
“That was rhetorical too!”
He sighed and stared at her. He had a feeling that this wasn’t the first time they were having this ‘back and forth’.
“Are you going to answer me?”
“I have to right? Ok, yes you did. Why do you ask?”
“Because I don’t think you’re my type.”
An awkward silence followed. That was unkind, why did he say that? He started to apologize when she began to giggle.
“Ermm, and you’re laughing because?”
“I’m glad you’re getting back to yourself, that’s all.”
“Yeah. An ass.”
He couldn’t help but smile.
“And you’re the babe that married an ass?”
“Unfortunately so.” She retorted right back, smiling.
She had a sharp mouth; he had to be wary of that in the future.
She walked up to him and hugged him. Slowly, he responded and held her back.
“It’s alright; it’ll all come back to you in time.”
He hoped she was right.
Just then, one of the doctors came in. As she let go, she whispered something he couldn’t quite get. He looked into her eyes, searching for any meaning, but she just walked back to her seat in the corner, blank expression back in place. What a character!
A few minutes later, as he fell asleep Sophie sighed and shut her eyes too.
He wasn’t exactly sure of what it was that woke him up. The strange dream he was having or the people moving round in the room.
He opened his eyes. It was dark!
He could make out two silhouettes moving around the room. For some reason he didn’t panic; he tried not to move.
His moved his eyes to where Sophia was sleeping and found a third silhouette bending over her.
Before he could make a move, he felt hands hold him down. He struggled in futility for a few seconds before someone whispered in his ear:
“Calm down, we’re getting you out of here to a safe place. Shhhhhhh!”
At first he wanted to fight them off, but on second thought, maybe they were right. He hadn’t been able to shake off the feeling that something wasn’t quite right about this place.
They got him out of bed and into a wheelchair and immediately they were on the move.
“Two more minutes. Hurry!” Someone whispered.
They seemed to know their way around in the dark and moved urgently.
He heard a door open, and then another… and then another. And then, he was outside, facing a van.
He barely had time to take in the cool night breeze when the back door opened and hands pulled him inside. The lights in the car park and the building returned as the door was slammed shut.
The engine revved and with a screech of tires, they were speeding off.
He struggled to his feet and looked through the window at the hospital he’d been in all this while.
Only there was no hospital! Only a small bungalow surrounded by trees!
