A couple of things ran through Jordan’s mind at this point… from self defense to screaming like a baby
However, with the feel of the cold steel on his head, he couldn’t quite settle on a particular one.
His assailant had been waiting for him behind the door.
There’re two of them then?
“Quietly move over to the bed. Don’t make any sudden move, and make no mistake; I DO know how to use this gun”
Jordan moved slowly towards the bed as instructed, his assailant walking like a ghost behind him. He glanced at the clock that hung on a wall across the room; it had been 7 minutes since he got back to the house.
Oh God! There isn’t enough time!
He calmed his nerves… he tried to calm his nerves.
“Hi Tee” He tried to sound calm. “It’s about time you showed up too”
Behind him, Tee’s fingers tightened on the gun.
“Or should I call you by your true name, Thomas”. Jordan turned to face him.
Thomas just stood there shocked, eyes wide but gun still leveled at Jordan’s head. He was VERY shocked that this man knew his name. As much as he wanted to find out how, he couldn’t wait to pull the trigger and get his job done.
They faced off.
Here he was, the killer with the gun, taken a bit off guard eager to get his job done.
Facing him, the unarmed victim, a genius really, but a soon-to-be-dead one. Waste.
The silence in the room unnerved Jordan. He had unsettled Thomas for a bit… just for a bit.
He thought of telling him of how he had traced certain “untraceable” payments made to him by his bosses, transactions he wasn’t privy to but had gone out of his way to unearth. Waaaay out of his way actually… probably one of the reasons he was in this situation right now. He could also tell him how he had discovered his identity, his wife and two daughters living at some beach house in Brazil. VERY nice beach house. The Acura he drives on a normal day, and the BMW (parked 3 streets away) that he uses when he has ‘other’ business… not at all unlike this one.
There was a lot more he could tell him. But he figured he’d probably end up with a bullet to the head a lot sooner than he expected if he tried to.
So he just waited.
Thomas sighed. He wasn’t interested in finding out how Jordan knew his name. It only made him want to end his existence faster.
“I am aware you have come across certain information that could make my client un-com-for-table”
It wasn’t a question. It was merely a statement of fact.
From the moment Jordan stepped into the room, he knew it had been searched. Obviously to no avail because there was nothing he was hiding. Well at least not here!
“I see. And that’s why you shot my wife… with MY gun!”
“Your gun, my gun, makes no difference cos she’s dead”
Jordan’s blood boiled, he clenched his fists. It was all he could do from hurling himself at the man.
“I see. And what’s going to be in the papers tomorrow? Top employee loses job, kills wife and commits suicide. Very sad story. No kids, no one but his French hearing Alsatian dog to witness the deaths.”
Thomas hated dealing with the smart ones. He wasn’t totally wrong but he’d missed out some juicy details. He would wait till the papers came out but unfortunately; Mr. Genius here would be dead before then.
“Are you going to make this easy for me and just tell me? Or do I have to use my errr, more particular skills to get it out of you?”
“Oh really? I’m dead already; you think your threats would make me any more afraid than I am?”
“You seem to talk a lot for an already dead scared man”
Jordan spread his arms. “You’ll have to forgive me. I guess I TALK a lot when I’m nervous.”
When Thomas didn’t respond, he added.
“I’ve been verrrry nervous of late Thomas. I guess that means I’ve talked alooooot!”
It finally dawned on him.
“Who have you spoken to about this?”
“What? You want to go on a killing spree? Sure, I’ll draw up a list. I’d like extra sheets of paper if you don’t mind”
Thomas knew Jordan was bluffing. At the same time, his cockiness made him doubt. He might not have spoken to as many people as he tried to imply, but it was possible that someone else knew.
He sighed.
“Mr Jordan, I’m afraid I’m going to have to get this over with soon. I’ll be taking your left thumb now.”
Jordan had NO doubt that he meant just what he had said. His heart beat violently in his chest and he sat down hard on the bed. His arms still spread.
Thomas walked towards him.
Step. Step. Step. Step… He decided to shoot a kneecap first to ensure he doesn’t make a sudden escape attempts.
He took aim.
Jordan closed his eyes at the same time the crashing sound of the gunshot went off.
He fell back on the bed.
“That was close dear… too close”
Thomas was flat on the floor and above him, with an outstretched gun stood Rene.
